Two programs which make advanced interactions between applications possible.
Nail it is a very small program (33 KB) which will have a big impact on how you think of the Digital Ink Layer. Nail it is free, and it enables you to make any application window “sticky” (so that it will stay on top of all other programs), simply by clicking on it. When you use Nail it, the application you click on is on top of every- thing, even the Digital Ink Layer. For an example of how this can work with SMART Notebook, watch the video below.
Ghost It allows you make any window into a Ghost Window. A Ghost Window is translucent, and will always appear on top of other windows, but when a Ghost Window is not in focus, all clicks will pass right through it until it becomes the active window again. Watch the video below for more details.

Steve,
You could try to attach Nail-it to a NB file within the attachments tab, but depending on your permissions at school, it may not launch.

Hi Emily,
For the icon(s) to appear in the Windows Notification Area, the program must to be running. To launch the program you can either search for it, and double click the icon, or you can find it among your Applications. Depending on how often you find yourself using these programs, you may want to add the program to your Start-up menu so that it launches automatically.

I have the applications downloaded and have tried running them, but I can’t find the icon like on the video so I can’t figure out how to try them out. Any ideas?
Gail, try “Afloat”. It’s available for OS X 10.6 (“Snow Leopard”) and OS X 10.5 (Leopard”). You can find the download here: http://infinite-labs.net/afloat/#download
If you download this at home, and use it in a Smart Notebook lesson, will it retain the same features? My district filters do not let either site through (blog/freeware), and I do not have download permissions.
I have a MAC. The app says windows. Am I out of luck?

Hi Sandy,
The program needs to be installed on the computer you wish to use it on. This would be your computer at school. If you’re allowed to install software on your computer at school, but you can’t access the sites we’ve linked to, you can:
1) Download the programs at home.
2) Save them to a flash drive.
3) Bring flash drive to school to install on your classroom computer.
Alternately, you may ask a District Tech about the possibility of including “Nail it” on the computer image they push out to classrooms next school year. It’s definitely the right time of year to have that type of conversation.
Hope this helps,
Matt
