7 Steps on How to Use the New Edmodo

Edmodo recently released a new look for their website. Many times when a website changes there’s a ton of confusion about old features, new features, and where everything is now located. Not with Edmodo! The simple and clear design makes it easy to navigate between all of the tools. So there shouldn’t be too much confusion for existing users, and teachers who want to learn how to use Edmodo for the first time are met with a sleek and simple interface.

Here are a few videos on how to navigate the new Edmodo site, and how to use the basic features for anyone interested in learning to use Edmodo in the classroom.

 1. Creating an Edmodo Account: Teacher and Student

The first and most simple skill with Edmodo is creating an account. There are two options when doing this. As a teacher, an account requires an email address and gives you the ability to create groups for your students to join. A student does not require an email address, making Edmodo a perfect solution for students under the age of 13. Students are unable to create groups, only join them.

 

2. How to Create and Join an Edmodo Group

After creating an account, the next step is to create a group. On the left side of the screen, click “Create.” Then follow the steps to create a group. There are advanced options to set permissions for students and monitoring posts. For example if you want to approve all comments before they are posted, or set all member s to read-only. These settings can always be adjusted at a later date, and changed by individual students or members of the group. You can set up a “Join” code and even lock the group from new members at any time!

 

 3. Posting Notes, Quizzes, Assignments, and More

Posting notes to the group feed inside Edmodo is the easiest way to get the discussion going within your virtual classroom. With the ability to attach files or website links, a teacher can easily share resources, such as classroom notes or blended learning videos, directly to  members of the group. Posting quizzes and assignments, complete with resources and due dates, are some of the other things you can post to the Edmodo news feed. These become  part of member calendars and grade books. The simple layout takes you through the steps to posting media rich content and assignments for your students to access from any web enabled device.

 

 4. Adding and Managing Library Content

Let Edmodo be your virtual library! Since Edmodo can be accessed across multiple devices, using the Edmodo library lets a teacher store content, resources, websites, and more for easy access. It allows the teacher to streamline the process of sharing content, especially if it is something they are using across several classes or different times during the year. The ability to only upload a file once, and share it over and over again from any device is extremely valuable, not to mention time saving. Using folders to manage the library content also makes it very simple for a teacher to “share” folders to students and groups in a clear and organized way.

 

5. Discover New Resources

One of my favorite features of Edmodo is probably one of the most underutilized and misunderstood parts of Edmodo. The “Discover” tab allows you to see what other teachers are using as resources and sharing on Edmodo. Edmodo uses complex algorithms to index and vet content to share with other teachers using Edmodo. Go to the Discover tab and type in a subject or topic you are teaching. You will be directed to trending resources, and you will see how many other teachers are using this resource with their students. You can then save these resources to your own Edmodo Library with one click. You can “follow” subjects or topics to keep current on what new resources are being used. Be as vague or specific as you want by searching “math” or a specific topic, like “Exponential Growth.”

 

6. Edmodo Planner

Get yourself and your students organized with the Edmodo planner. The planner is a calendar that populates content automatically with quizzes, assignments, and alerts that have been sent to a specific group. The students will have easy access to the planner within Edmodo and will be reminded when different things are coming up or due. The planner is an easy feature to use, and very important to keep students informed about deadlines.

7. App Store

There are a growing number of apps for the Edmodo community. Browse the store, follow publishers (like Teq!), and install a large variety of Apps to your Edmodo groups. The apps vary from interactive games, study guides, and much more.

    hi i am a student, how doi leave a group ?

      Hi Amanda,
      In the web version of Edmodo (not the iPad), select the group you want to get rid of.
      Next to the name of the group you’ll see a little cog representing “settings”. Click on that cog.
      If you’re trying to delete a group that you yourself created, you will see the option “Group Settings” at the top of the menu that will open. Choose that.
      The Group Settings window will open with an option to delete the group at the bottom. You may also choose to merely archive the group.
      **If this is a group that you did not create but merely joined, when you click on the settings cog, you will see a simple menu with the open to withdraw. Click on that and that group will be removed from your list of groups.

    My school uses Skedula. . Can I use Edmodo independently or does it have to engaged by the school first?

      Hi Brenda,
      This is an excellent question. The beautiful thing about Edmodo is that it is completely free to use so unless your school forbids it (which I can’t see being the case since its free and SAFE) you are totally able to use it in your own class with your own students. Definitely check with your school’s administrators though and reference your school’s AUP. Who knows, though? Maybe your colleagues will jump on the bandwagon too.     Great resources. Thank you. I did notice that in the Discover New Resources video, it blended information with the previous video, Adding and Managing Library Content.

      Thanks for the comment, and great catch on the two videos being mixed! I am a huge fan of the Discover feature, I did not know what it was used for a long time and once I found out it is one of my first places to go find resources I share with teachers.
