In today’s modern classroom, teachers may find it difficult to connect with their students who cannot stop looking at their phones. Rather than shun the use of such technology, teachers should embrace it and use it to their advantage in order to make their subject matter more exciting.
To help, we’ve accumulated five Instagram accounts that are sure to enhance your students love and understanding of various science topics. Check out our Online Professional development platform at onlinepd.teq.comto find more ways to use your student’s web-enabled devices to enhance their learning experience, including our course Social Media in the Classroom.
1. Inverse Science
Each post on this Instagram account is followed by a caption explaining the image in scientific terms. Pictures are updated regularly and are timely. For example, did you know that each Halloween the town of Churchill, Manitoba is invaded by polar bears? Follow @inversescience to find out why.
2. Nat Geo WILD
National Geographic magazine has always been filled with amazing photos and this Instagram account follows in that tradition. With over 1,400 posts and counting, this account is updated regularly with both pictures, videos, and brief scientific explanations for each post.

3. Science by Guff
Both pictures and videos are included in this account as well as a synopsis explaining the science behind them. Check out the timelapse of “The Narrows,” a hike in Zion National Park between rock walls as tall as the Empire State Building, and students will be eager to put down their phones and get back to nature.
4. Discovery.hd
Pictures of nature, animals, people and places that will pique your student’s interest and have them asking lots of questions.

5. BindiSueIrwin
