Creating Materials in Your Google Classroom

If you are using Google Classroom as a central online location to work with your students, you can create a set of documents and resources for them to use. Google calls these resources “materials,” and they are found posted in the classwork tab of your Google Classroom. Let’s see how it works!

What kinds of things should a teacher make available as a material within Google Classroom?
  • Documents: class syllabus, grading scale, permission slips, weekly or daily schedule, class expectations, etc.
  • Website Links: URL addresses of sites you expect students to use often or to visit regularly
  • Exemplars: examples of student work that show correct formatting/structure and following directions
  • Worksheets and Assignments: anything that students will need to work on for learning and assessment
How to add a materials section to your Google Classroom classwork tab

1. Go to your Google Classroom at http://classroom.google.com.

2. Choose one of your classes and click on Classwork.

3. Click on the Create button and choose Material.

…or if you need to create a new one.

6. On the right side of your screen, add a new Topic and call it “Class Documents.”

7. Finish this process by selecting which class/student(s) this is for.

8. Then, either post it, or schedule it to post at a later date.

9. Back in your Classwork page you will see the new Topic on the left side and your document(s) listed in your Classwork stream.

As another example of posting materials in your Google Classroom, let’s gather some website addresses that we have students use regularly and post them in a “Math Websites” topic.

Here’s how to add additional materials like web resources

1. In the Classwork tab of your Classroom, go to Create > Material.

2. Type in your Title and Description.

4. Paste in the URL address of one website, then repeat this process to post more than one.

5. On the right side, before posting, create a new topic and call it “Class Websites.” Now, post it!

6. On the Classwork tab of your Google Classroom, you will now see this new Topic on the left and the posted materials in the middle of your stream.

Good luck with this process, and remember to stay organized! Also note that any materials you post in one class can be used in any and all of your other classes, which is a great way to say some time and increase efficiency as you organize your Google Classroom and materials.
