At the start of the 2016-2017 school year, the 5th-grade students of Citrus Elementary (located in Vero Beach, Florida) were introduced to a new way of collecting data. The district introduced a pilot program of the Labdisc Gensci—a K-12 science tool that comes equipped with more than 10 wireless sensors to create a complete lab in the palm of your students’ hands.

As seen in the video below, the students of Ms. Long’s 5th-grade class were tasked with a series of activities where they would test the capillary action of different types of water. Using the LabDisc, the students collected data from a variety of water samples and were able to analyze their findings in real time.

Becky Teske, the district’s science specialist, was thrilled with the results. According to Ms. Teske, one of the best parts of the day was seeing the students react to the LabDisc’s ability to collect data in real time. “It was awesome to see the success and engagement in the classroom. Going through the science process using this as the collection piece, you could see their faces as the information fluctuated in real time.”

With one successful day in the books, Ms. Tesks feels confident that the LabDisc pilot will have a positive impact on the school and the students, stating, “I know the Labdisc will be a great tool for this school and for all the other schools in our district and will improve student engagement in science.”
