The AI Literacy and Instruction Learning Path

Session 1: Introduction

This primary session acts as your roadmap to success in the micro-credential. We will introduce the entire series, outlining the individual sessions and the progression of topics. Additionally, we’ll discuss the structure, assignments, and independent practice required to receive a certificate. Join us for all the information you need to be successful in this AI micro-credential!

Session 2: Fundamentals

Before you can effectively use AI, you must understand the basics. This session lays the groundwork by diving into the core definitions, history, and future trajectory of this technology. We’ll define AI and also differentiate it from common misconceptions, introduce generative models and Large Language Models (LLMs), and understand the three primary types of AI.

Session 3: Responsible Use

With a solid grasp of the fundamentals, we’ll shift our focus to the ethical and responsible usage strategies that are essential for safely using AI in schools. We’ll cover the best practices for data security and privacy when using AI tools, how to identify and evaluate “safe” and reliable AI tools, and effective strategies for developing digital citizenship skills. This course prioritizes overall AI literacy for both staff and students.

Session 4: Essential Skills

This session moves theory into practice, focusing on the core skill required to effectively leverage AI: prompting. Learning how to ask AI the right questions is the difference between a generic output and a useful instructional resource. We’ll dive into effectively using AI in an educational environment, the best prompting practices, and the bias that AI may exhibit. We’ll also cover the importance of acknowledging bias when using this digital tool.

Session 5: Planning

How can teachers use AI to enhance instructional practice? This session dives into practical applications, focusing on pedagogical use cases for AI. Discover how to leverage AI for streamlining your workflow. In this session, we’ll focus on utilizing AI for lesson planning, differentiation, and scaffolding. Learn how to design creative cross-curricular and transdisciplinary connections. We will also explore how to envision and utilize AI as a co-planner.

Session 6: Assessments

Session 6 addresses the critical role AI can play in assessment and feedback cycles. This session provides clarity on designing assessments with AI and using technology to enhance student support. We’ll focus on designing effective assessments for classroom usage and using AI to provide personalized and timely student feedback.

Session 7: Conclusion

This final session wraps up the series, reviews all key concepts, and provides the necessary guidance to complete the final assessment. In the final assignment, you will show off your skills by generating a resource using an AI tool and modifying the original output to fit your specific instructional needs.
