Creating Division Symbols in your SMART Notebook Software

Classroom Tools
To my fellow math teachers out there, I have the solutions to solve all of your division symbol problems!
If you are trying to create some of your own content in SMART Notebook, you may need the correct division symbol to write your practice examples. Depending on the grade level you work with, you have various ways to model and discuss the division of terms. Whether using a fraction bar, division symbol, or a long division house, there are easy options to add these into your SMART Notebook software.
Gallery Options
Doing a simple search for the word “division” in the SMART Notebook Gallery will reveal various options to add symbols to your lessons. Click and drag any of these pictures onto your page and type in additional text to write your question sets.
Access the SMART Notebook gallery, and search for “division” to access multiple symbols to use with text. You can find these in the Pictures category.
Inserting Symbols
To add an obelus (yes, that is the official name of this symbol: ÷), you can also access the option to insert symbols from the text tool in your SMART Notebook taskbar. While typing in Notebook, when it comes time to add the division symbol or other math type, follow these simple steps:
1. Click on the tool for More Text Options.
2. Click on the Insert Symbols (Math) tools.
3. To choose the appropriate Math function symbol:
a. For Windows machines, choose the appropriate symbols category and locate the division symbol.
b. For Mac machines, choose the category for Math Symbols and pick the desired symbol, like an obelus!
These are pretty easy ways to create well-developed division questions and lesson content. Additionally, don’t underestimate the use of your simple text and line tools to create a fraction. Type the number 3 on your page, type the number 4 underneath, and between the two, add in a straight line — so simple! Once you have created one, group it together and place it in your “My Content” folder of the gallery. Creating these types of templates saves time and makes content creation easier.
Let us know which method you like best for adding in division symbols to your SMART Notebook page. Have fun and divide away!
